Engine and Powertrain
- Pure-Gas V-6: Contrary to earlier rumors of a four-cylinder turbo or a purely electric (EV) drivetrain, Nissan confirmed the Xterra will feature a traditional internal-combustion V-6 engine.
- Hybrid Option: A V-6 hybrid powertrain will also be offered. The timeline for the hybrid release (whether it launches alongside the gas version or months later) is still being finalized.
- No Manual Transmission: Pandikuthira explicitly ruled out a manual gearbox. He stated that manuals are better suited for sports cars (like the Nissan Z) and noted that a manual shifter takes up valuable "real estate" in the center console that customers prefer for storage.
- Rugged Styling: The design is described as "tough," "in-your-face," and "super imposing." Pandikuthira mentioned seeing a full-scale foam mock-up in Japan that "takes your breath away."
- Anti-Aerodynamic Aesthetic: While many modern SUVs are becoming softer and more rounded to improve fuel efficiency, Nissan is prioritizing a "burly" and "trail-ready" appearance, using other engineering methods to meet efficiency standards.
- Body-on-Frame: The vehicle will maintain its rugged roots, sharing a platform with other Mississippi-built trucks (likely the Frontier).
