Article detailing why Xterra's V6 Parallel Hybrid Engine System will provide the Xterra an advantage.

The Nissan Xterra Is Coming Back With Something the Bronco and Wrangler Don’t Have

Parallel hybrids are ideal for what the Xterra nameplate represents, and Nissan is headed in that direction.

Summary:
Unlike a "series hybrid" (where the engine just acts as a generator), a parallel hybrid allows both the V6 engine and the electric motor to send power directly to the wheels.
  • Low-end Torque: The electric motor will provide instant torque from 0 RPM, which is a massive advantage for off-roading, rock crawling, and heavy towing capacity.
  • The Edge: Neither the current Bronco nor the Wrangler offers a V6 hybrid setup (Jeep's 4xe is a 4-cylinder, and the 392 V8 is being phased out).

Here's a simple video comparing difference between the different hybrid systems - Series, Parallel and Series-Parallel

Pretty sure Toyota Tacoma/40Runner use a parallel HEV system where the electric motor resides between the engine and transmission. It'll be interesting to see where Nissan puts the electric motor.
